Aloha and welcome to the Hawaii Justice Coalition’s Day of Empathy Rally. Before we get started I want to acknowledge that we are standing on occupied land. I feel it is particularly important to recognize the occupation of Hawaii at our rally because of the ongoing trauma this has caused to Hawaiians, who are grossly over-represented in the criminal justice system and who suffer from disproportionate rates of houselessness, illnesses and low educational and occupational attainment levels.

We are here today to raise awareness of the damage that incarceration does to people and communities, and to highlight some of the ways in which we can move forward toward a better system. Before our speakers share their personal narratives with you—stories that serve to illustrate why criminal justice reform is one of the most important human rights struggles of our time—I wanted to frame the discussion in the larger context of privatization of public goods. Because, today, we face a serious threat to the concept of an open and free democracy.

Our government of, by and for the people has undergone a decades-long shift toward plutocracy, a form of society that is defined by control of wealth. In this system, corporate money buys influence in politics, and the politicians who benefit from this influx of private money then create or tear down laws to boost the bottom lines of their corporate patrons. This results in a concentration of wealth and power among a handful of wealthy and connected elites and causes systemic inequality and injustice throughout the world. This process has been spurred on by an ever-mounting privatization of public goods like education, healthcare and natural resources. This consolidation of wealth and power is aimed at freezing social mobility and cementing the status and power of the ruling oligarchy.

Assaults on public education include Betsy DeVos’s so-called “school choice” program, which is nothing more than a thinly veiled plan to dismantle funding and support for public schools and to manufacture a new kind of segregation based on income and status. This scheme seeks to rob working class, immigrant and under-privileged students of any hope of advancing themselves socially.

At the same time, our public universities have seen their budgets slashed as states buy into the conservative myth that private funding improves educational outcomes, expands access to higher education and saves the government money. In fact, the exact opposite is true. This has left public universities with the painful choice of either raising tuition and saddling students with ever-mounting debt, or entering into private contracts with corporations that convert our schools into their R&D wings for pennies on the dollar.

The result of this private interference in our educational system is a widening educational attainment gap as the democratization of intelligence shrinks and learning becomes a commodity that only the rich can afford. With diminished educational outcomes and a system that favors test-taking over critical-thinking, corporate control is made easier.

The situation in healthcare is the same. Every year, insurance companies, pharmaceutical corporations, health consortiums, private research centers and health product manufacturers make billions of dollars through the privatization of another public good: health. These companies then invest millions into the political campaigns of politicians that turn around and block any and all effort to reform the system and democratize healthcare. The result is a growing number of Americans left uninsured, in debt, and suffering from diseases and afflictions that could be remedied multiple times over in an equitable system.

A third example of privatization’s harmful effects on people is the criminal justice or correctional system. As a society built upon laws, we have agreed to live according to these laws, and to be subjected to state-sanctioned punishment when we violate them—with the understanding that this system will act justly and fairly toward all of us. But when commercial interests insert themselves in this system, the policing, adjudicating and incarceration of citizens becomes a tyranny.

The history of America’s correctional system begins with the 18th century idea of “Enlightenment.” The penitentiary was meant to replace corporal and capital punishment with an attempt at personal growth. At the time, incarceration was a progressive idea. And yet, by the time the Civil War was over, privatization had given rise to a burgeoning Prison-Industrial Complex.

The creation of Jim Crow laws that sought to recreate the social dynamics of Slavery in the Antebellum South lead to an explosion in the construction of incarceration facilities with for-profit motivations designed to house the rising number of minority citizens targeted by these laws and other racist policies. After slavery was outlawed, Southern plantation owners and the politicians that benefited from their patronage used Jim Crow laws and the American penitentiary setting as a means to recreate the free labor they enjoyed under the Slave System. Under this new Prison-Industrial System, laws were written specifically to target African Americans, then Mexican Americans and then other immigrants and people of color, to increase the contact between these people and the criminal justice system and to establish a large incarcerated population from which the state would then lease unpaid laborers to plantations and other businesses: Slavery by another name.

And so the history of America’s Prison-Industrial System is rooted in racism. Although much of Jim Crow was later outlawed, the effects persisted in other racist policies like the War on Drugs, mandatory minimums, the Three Strikes policy and other “Tough On Crime” stances.

Even as violent crime was on the decline all over the country in the late ’70s and early ’80s, Ronald Reagan presided over the largest increase in the construction of prisons in the history of the United States, first while Governor of California, and then while President. During his tenure in these positions of power, California constructed more prisons than it had in its entire history prior. This trend was mirrored nationally, and new prisons were privately constructed, managed and operated all over the country. Between 1970 and 2010, the number of people incarcerated in the United States grew by 700 percent. We now incarcerate almost a quarter of the prisoners in the entire world, while representing only 5 percent of the world’s population. At no other point in U.S. history—including when slavery was legal—have so many people been deprived of their liberty.

When states enter into contracts with these corporations, they pay them a fee per bed that is filled. It is, therefore, in the direct interest of these prison companies and their shareholders to incarcerate as many people as possible, which is why companies like CoreCivic and Geo Group spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and more lobbying politicians each year to secure a continuous supply of inmates and an uninterrupted profit stream. Plutocracy at work.

We now know for a fact that this trend toward privatization is, in fact, costing governments at all levels millions in taxpayer monies; we know that it destroys lives, families and communities; that it actually endangers communities and erodes the social fabric of our cities. We know that, when it comes to the correctional system, this privatization recreates cycles of oppression and that it perpetuates artificial barriers to attainment and quality of life among working class people, especially minorities and, increasingly, women. We know that it is the continuation of the racist system of slavery.

Why is this important here in Hawaii right now? Because the conditions that have led to over-incarceration exist in our island home as well, and they have created an overcrowding situation that the state government intends to “address” through further expansion of the Prison Industrial System. The Ige Administration and its Department of Public Safety have both signaled support for the concept of an at least partially-private facility to house incarcerated people, many of whom are pre-trial, non-violent and/or are simply too poor to afford bail. At the same time, a pair of bills are advancing through the legislature this session that would create a public-private partnership authority to manage projects that rely on the privatization model. These projects inherently possess a profit motive and, although these bills do not expressly mention incarceration, they could easily open up the doorway for privatization of the proposed new jail facility on Oahu. SB2705 and HB2581 represent acquiescence on the part of our elected officials to corporate interests and capitulation to the privatization of public goods.

As you will hear in the stories of the subsequent speakers today, incarcerated people do not deserve to be treated as commodities. They are individuals deserving of human rights. They are not one-dimensional caricatures; they are complicated beings and products of their environments. Exploitation, inequity, racism, poverty, violence, cultural erasure, exclusion and rejection from the socioeconomic elitism that privatization has created within American society leads to often unavoidable mistakes. But the difference between just punishment and the further exploitation, violence and rejection that has become widespread within the correctional system is a vast chasm that an increasingly porous and tenuous social safety net has long-since been able to adequately cover.

When incarcerated people are treated with dignity and respect, they are far more likely to heal from the injuries of privatization, poverty and cultural erasure. When they are able to heal through restorative justice programs, they are more likely to return to their communities stronger than when they left. This is a deeper kind of democracy; of compassion, engagement and community strength. When they are forced to endure the harassment of a militarized police force, the legal injustices inherited from Jim Crow and the brutality of the prison system, they often emerge worse off than they were before: bitter, depressed, lost—incapable of re-integrating into society. This creates an enormous cost, both in terms of dollars as well as social capital, that we as a society collectively end up paying, all while corporate elites continue to profit from the pain and suffering of oppressed human beings.

That’s why we gather each year for a Day of Empathy: to acknowledge the humanity of these people, to challenge the privatization narrative perpetuated by these elites and manifested in the Prison Industrial Complex, and to renew our support for the creation of a democratized and just system where every human being has equal access to public goods and the opportunity thrive, and where no corporate entity is permitted to profit from suffering, poverty, inequality or violence of any kind. Let us alu like—strive together—to move our society toward to a more just, compassionate future: one in which, I hope, we will no longer have a need for prisons because public goods rest securely in the hands of people, not corporations and democracy is once again genuine and true. Our dear friend, Lorie Goodman, knows Darryl Anka, the filmmaker, & shares these words . . .

In the mid 1980s my family and I went to small gatherings in L.A. in the living room of a woman who was writing her doctoral thesis on channeling. We met Darryl and experienced the authentic and deeply moving teachings from Bashar.

Eventually Bashar led us on guided meditations to his ship, and afterwards we shared our perceptions. We were surprised at how our individual observations knit together to create a cohesive narrative. We had the strong sense that we had all been there together, and the support in the group made it possible to explore more deeply.

Over the years, I’ve watched as Darryl’s ability to surrender to the channelling process increased. He became more and more blended with Bashar, and a highlight of this film is that Darryl shares the stages he went through, and what it took to get beyond his personality to be able to share this multidimensional wisdom from his higher self and Bashar.

The existence of UFOs had been “proved beyond reasonable doubt,” according the head of the secret Pentagon program that analyzed the mysterious aircrafts. Luis Elizondo [said] of the sightings, “In my opinion, if this was a court of law, we have reached the point of ‘beyond reasonable doubt.’ I think it’s pretty clear this is not us, and it’s not anyone else, so no one has to ask questions where they’re from.” Elizondo led the U.S. Defense Department’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, investigating evidence of UFOs and alien life, from 2007 to 2012, when it was shuttered. Its existence was first reported by The New York Times last week. Elizondo [said] that there had been “lots” of UFO sightings and witnesses interviewed during the program’s five years. Investigators pinpointed geographical “hot spots” that were sometimes near nuclear facilities and power plants. They also observed trends among the aircrafts, including lack of flight surfaces on the objects and extreme maneuverability. “There was never any display of hostility, but … they maneuvered in ways no one else in the world had,” he said. Despite Pentagon funding running out in 2012, Elizondo oversaw UFO work for another five years before resigning in October 2017 out of frustration with the secrecy of the investigations. He had pushed for videos of the possible alien sightings to be made public so people could see the footage. In his resignation letter to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Elizondo asked, “Why aren’t we spending more time and effort on this issue?”

Note from Fred Burks, peerservice.org : Elizondo is one of several former government officials now employed by To the Stars Academy for Arts and Sciences, which claims it will “advance research into unexplained phenomena and develop related technology.” This may be part of a planned roll out so that the public becomes more comfortable with the existence of UFOs. Many dozens of top officials have spoken openly of their personal involvement in the UFO cover-up, yet the media has failed to make this headlines until now. — In the $600 billion annual Defense Department budgets, he $22 million spent on the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was almost impossible to find.Which was how the Pentagon wanted it.For years, the program investigated reports of unidentified flying objects, according to Defense Department officials, interviews with program participants and records obtained by The New York Times. It was run by a military intelligence official, Luis Elizondo, on the fifth floor of the Pentagon’s C Ring, deep within the building’s maze.The Defense Department has never before acknowledged the existence of the program, which it says it shut down in 2012. But its backers say that, while the Pentagon ended funding for the effort at that time, the program remains in existence. For the past five years, they say, officials with the program have continued to investigate episodes brought to them by service members, while also carrying out their other Defense Department duties.The shadowy program — parts of it remain classified — began in 2007, and initially it was largely funded at the request of Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat who was the Senate majority leader at the time and who has long had an interest in space phenomena. Most of the money went to an aerospace research company run by a billionaire entrepreneur and longtime friend of Mr. Reid’s, Robert Bigelow, who is currently working with NASA to produce expandable craft for humans to use in space.On CBS’s “60 Minutes” in May, Mr. Bigelow said he was “absolutely convinced” that aliens exist and that U.F.O.s have visited Earth.Officials with the program have also studied videos of encounters between unknown objects and American military aircraft — including one released in August of a whitish oval object, about the size of a commercial plane, chased by two Navy F/A-18F fighter jets from the aircraft carrier Nimitz off the coast of San Diego in 2004.Mr. Reid, who retired from Congress this year, said he was proud of the program. “I’m not embarrassed or ashamed or sorry I got this thing going,” Mr. Reid said in a recent interview in Nevada. “I think it’s one of the good things I did in my congressional service. I’ve done something that no one has done before.”Two other former senators and top members of a defense spending subcommittee — Ted Stevens, an Alaska Republican, and Daniel K. Inouye, a Hawaii Democrat — also supported the program. Mr. Stevens died in 2010, and Mr. Inouye in 2012.While not addressing the merits of the program, Sara Seager, an astrophysicist at M.I.T., cautioned that not knowing the origin of an object does not mean that it is from another planet or galaxy. “When people claim to observe truly unusual phenomena, sometimes it’s worth investigating seriously,” she said. But, she added, “what people sometimes don’t get about science is that we often have phenomena that remain unexplained.”

We are currently in the Eclipse Zone that culminates next week with the New Moon Solar Eclipse on Thursday, February 15th at 27° Aquarius. Solar eclipses act as major catalysts in life, triggering sudden change and course corrections. I’ve been seeing the upcoming Solar Eclipse appear as a new threshold doorway, that we pass through and connect to our Soul’s life on the either side. This is a powerful leveling up for Lightworkers as we move into a new space beyond.
Since our solar system fully merged into the gamma photon bubble at the galactic center in 2012, there has been increasing solar surges of intense light consciousness. For the past 5 years we have been steadily infused with higher and higher solar light rays that alter the brain and molecular structure. Light is returning to the planet in ever-increasing levels. Our role is to embody the light code and consciousness within our biofield and seed into the planetary field.
The photonic light surge accelerates during specific multi-dimensional events, including eclipses, solstice/equinox, 8-8, 11-11 and 12-12 Ascension alignments. Greater photonic light enters the atmosphere and penetrates the physical particle field. It can feel intense, overwhelming at times. The powerful photonic light pushes density to the surface for transmutation. Imagine how ‘oil on water’ rises to the surface for cleaning.
We are experiencing a surge right now! Since the Leo Lunar Eclipse we have been clearing and releasing lifetimes of trauma from the cellular memory. Old patriarchal patterns of abuse, aggression and control are unwinding from our human psyche and body. We are being prepared to pass thru the Solar Eclipse doorway next week.
During mid-February we will see Venus appear again as an evening star. The divine feminine/Mother/Goddess presence is palpable, as we heal and mend from lifetimes of pain and suffering. You are feeling the need to shift and change, to restructure what has been held in place for months or years, or even decades. Coming soon, we have an important social justice opportunity. As you may know, Hawai’i’s Governor Ige wants to build a bigger jail . . . & instead, we can use that money to reduce the need for jail.

There’s a “Draft Environmental Impact Statement” (DEIS) regarding building this bigger jail, and we can make our voices heard in response to it, . . . & we can even have dinner while doing it (~yes, a dinner spread will be provided!).

The Black Lives Matter movement has raised consciousness among us all regarding the issue of mass incarceration. This gives me faith that if we can just get the word out among all the caring people we know, we can positively change the course of criminal justice policy in Hawai’i.

New Jail? HJC Community Input Workshop, With Dinner!

Responses to the Draft Environmental Impact Statement regarding building a new jail must be submitted by January 8th. The Hawai`i Justice Coalition is hosting a community meeting & workshop for all to learn more about the report and to write comments & questions together. To quote Kat Brady, “Let’s get a river of responses to this expensive project that does not address the critical needs of our people.” We are the Aloha state, here’s our chance to show it! ♥

The new jail is proposed because developers stand to make money from development along the rail line, which goes by the current jail, and because private corporations want the building contract. Let’s bring an end to developer-driven public policy ~let it be research-based, data-driven, best-practices that direct our tax dollars towards greater public safety at less cost. We say “no new jail” ~we can eliminate overcrowding with bail & sentencing reform . . . decriminalizing drug use, providing drug abuse treatment services . . . help, not harm, “Humanize not Criminalize.”

Bail Reform: Research has shown that money bail is not necessary, and 43% of inmates are in jail because they can’t afford to post bail. To make this personal for us: a member of our tribe was held in OCCC for seven months awaiting trial, because she didn’t post bail. This was at a cost of over $30,000 to the state of Hawai’i, totally unnecessary, & a harmful experience for her that she is still recovering from.

Sentencing Reform: decriminalizing drug use, & instead making it a public health issue, providing addiction treatment programs for free. No longer put people who have committed misdemeanors in jail, put them in programs.

OMG, it’s the 5th Anniversary of VibeTribe & AudiOasis this month! We’re celebrating the huge positive impact that everyone in our tribe has had –& will have– in creating the new & better world that is rapidly coming online on Planet Earth. Of course it’s not about what’s in the news, it’s about what each of us, at the grassroots, are doing to transform ourselves & our world, in living our truth, speaking up, changing our old patterns, & being LOVE, moment by moment!

And due to our (super-cool!) ability to effortlessly manifest magic & miracles, our co-Founder, Jonathan Fritzler, will be here to celebrate with us, YaY! Jonathan launched his career as an internatioanl speaker from our beautiful Hawai’i shores, & has a heart-opening ability to connect us with the best that is within us & around us ~it’s a great joy to have him here!

With the help of others in our tribe, I’ll share a powerful story about how our world has gotten into it’s current far-less-than-ideal- state, with some details you may not be aware of, that will help us all see how important it is for each of us to be in joy, see how far we’ve actually all come, & to see how, together, we’re in the process of a huge & amAzing transformation! ♡”*•.¸¸☼

As the VibeTribe Manifesto says below, I “humbly intend to end war, hunger, oppression, tyranny, & disease”. . . & I do know that may sound pretty crazy at the moment, ~that’s why I’m very excited to share why I have faith that we can & will.

Please bring friends & spread the word about our gathering? Because we are “between two worlds,” and this is an “all hands on deck” kind of moment in the evolution of humanity . . . ~the more we unite in our vision & our faith, the faster we will continue to create the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.

♡ HeArt Dance of Consciousness ♡ ~Sunday Evenings~ 7:30 to 9:30 Art @ Marks in Chinatown

A weekly practice with HeArt Dance Ohana, where we gather to be guided through ecstatic dance journeys that hold a safe and sacred container for authentic expression, Connection, Creation, Freedom, Joy, Love!!

Deep Listening in the dance is one way to connect to our Heart, to the Gratitude and Blessing that we are together as One. It involves simply listening, and then moving spontaneously as we feel called to move. As dancers, we enter a pact to deeply listen to what the minister of music communicates, and at the same time the minister of music listens deeply to the moving response of the dancers. On both sides, we share a willingness to participate, deepening in connection, savoring what arises, and moving through what we feel. When this happens, healing is not only possible, it becomes palpable.

This Sunday, 7:30pm to 9:30pm, Amalaïa will offer a wide variety of genres, beats, rhythms, and sounds to craft a musical message and blessing for our Ohana. We invite you to join in the trance, listen deeply, dance from within, and express our Gratitude, Thanksgivings and Blessings as One.

☼ Evno is the Director of Ong King . . . & has been a part of the arts scene in Honolulu since 2002. Working with musicians and artists of a diverse variety of genres, he has seen much come and go, but is devoted to the sense of community that Oahu provides for its artists. Evno is an accomplished Radio Host & DJ, a group facilitator, and community leader. He is obsessed with the glowing orbs that tansverse our sky.
