Many of us resort to destructive ways of managing the damaging emotional experiences in our lives. These may include blocking out negative emotions with excessive drinking, gaming, or TV. Managing uncomfortable feelings and thoughts by pushing them away makes them persist, however, and then and erupt when we least expect it. Emotion suppression over time is also associated with a raft of health problems. When left unmanaged, chronic stress can lead to the development of stomach ulcers, stroke, asthma, heart disease and cancer. And dealing with our anger by yelling is more likely to inflate negative emotions rather than resolve them. There are lots of more successful ways to process our negative emotions so that we become free of them, and we can all learn these methods & practice them with ease.
